If there was one place I dreaded going to,
If there was one place where not just me but everyone breaks down,
It is Tilla e Zainabiya

I had visited karbala e Moalla when I was a child in 1960 and i had vague recollections of the place.
I had ften heard it described in majalis and by my mother as that heart breaking spot from where Janab e Zainab a.s., the mazloom, the sher dil khatoon had watched her beloved brother Imam Hussain a.s. attain martyrdom.

This is the high point between the khaima gaah and the qatal gaah , where on 10th Moharrum, the day we commemorate as Aashoora , Janab e Zainab a.s. stood to gain a vantage point.

From here she could see what was happening on the battle field.

A lady who like her mother ,Janab e Fatima Zehra a.s , valued pardah, ran out of the khaima gaah in anguish to see her beloved brother for the last time.

"Tadap kar Yaaso Hazrat ne pukaraa Zainab Ai Zainab
Tera maajaaya marne ko sidhaara Zainab Ai Zainab".

From this small hillock Janabe Zainab A.S. could see Imam Hussein A.S. when he fell from the horse during the battle and was martyred.
There used to be a small mawam earlier but now a grand structure has been made.
Maqam has been built on this spot where zawars recite 2 rakaat namaaz.
on Tilla-e-Zainabiya its written Al salam alaiki Ya Jabal al Sabr

When you go inside and stand in the very place where janab e Zainab a.s. stood your heart will break.
Most of the ziareens were sobbing uncontrollably at what they imagined in their mind's eye but the lion hearted daughter of Ali a.s. actually saw.

My words don't have the strength and so I will leave you with the words of Mir Anis on what my Mazloom Bibi saw that fateful afternoon.
24th January 2010
Jab bulawa aata hai tab hi jana hota hai. I am praying that this time my bulawa has come from Maula and that I can do my Ziarat. Allah Qabool karna.
Many years ago( 1995) I was diagnosed with a cyst and the doctors thought it quite serious and ordered a mammogram.
When I told my mother about it she panicked and made a mannat that once I got the all-clear she would send me to Karbala Moalla. By the grace of Allah and the Ahle Bait I was cleared. Immediately Amma gave me the necessary funds to make the trip.
Due to some personal problems I was unable to go then. Amma and I used to plan that we will both go together. Amma will pay for the ziarat and I will in turn take her to Turkey for some R&R after that.
But as they say man proposes and God disposes. Amma died in 2004 of the same disease that she was scared I might get.
Now I am living n Muscat and I have paid the money to join the kafilah of Mr. Sohel Lokhandwala from Dubai.
The program has come and Inshallah we will leave on Sat morning.
I am praying day and night that Allah and My Maulas call me there, give me the opportunity of Ziarat and Inshallah Ziarat qabool karein.
I have been reading a lot about the etiquettes of ziarats and preparations for it and thought of starting a blog where I could describe my experiences and maybe help others as well.
The first step has been to download all the Ziarats from the website--
http://www.ziaraat.org/
It describes all the things a ziara / ziareen must do.
In preparation thereof I will be keeping 3 rozas from tomorrow.
I think this abstinence is to get you into a more pious frame of mind.
Apart from that from this site you can download guides in English also.
The pdf file Iraaq in English gives you complete step by step guide on what to do and when.. with Ziarats in Arabic and transliteration.

25th Jan
Spent the day browsing through the literature I have downloaded.
I have divided the book on Ziarat into smaller bits, by stapling together all the Ziarats of one place at a time. Otherwise the book becomes too cumbersome to carry. I have also downloaded the Sahifa Sajjadiya for recitation there.

Before Leaving
27th Jan
What does the pilgrim have to do before he embarks on the journey?
1. Give Sadqa.
2. It is mustahab to fast on the last 3 days before leaving for Ziarat.
3. Before starting the journey one should perform Ghusl.
4. Subsequently, he should collect his family members and pray 2 rakat Namaz and recite the dua given on
http://www.ziaraat.org/articles/etiq.php
28th Jan
Finally the wait is almost over: we will be leaving for Dubai tomorrow morning and from there for Iraq (Baghdad) early on 30th Jan.
Got a call from the organizer Mr. Sohel Lokhandwala asking us to report to the Dubai terminal 2 airport by 3.30am on 30th.
Since there will be no time tomorrow I am posting the dua to be recited before leaving. I instructed my daughter about giving Sadqa, imamzamin and seeing me off from under the Quran.
Collect family members and pray 2 rakat Namaz and recite following dua: I am writing the English translation. ( the Arabic dua can be downloaded from http://www.ziaraat.org/articles/etiq.php)
O Allah, as a trust, I, today, give myself, my family,

My property, and my children in Thy charge. and

those who are doing the same as I am doing,

Whether my fellow travellers or travelling separately,

O Allah, protect us along with (our) faith, and keep a watch over us.

O Allah let us remain covered by Thy mercy,

do not withdraw Thy favours from us as we are anxiously longing for Thee.

O Allah, we take refuge with Thee from

the inconveniences of the journey,

sad return, and

witnessing any untoward sight harmful to our family, property and children, in this world and in the Hereafter.

O Allah, I direct myself towards Thee in this journey for obtaining Thy pleasure and for seeking Thy nearness

O Allah, therefore, let me accomplish that which I desire and expect from Thee and Thy friends,

O the Most Merciful of all who show mercy!

Then he should go near the door and recite Tasbeeh of Hazrat Fatima Zahra (AS), then he should recite Surah Hamd & Ayatul Kursi facing front, his right & his left.
Then recite the following dua:

O Allah I turn my face towards Thee (refer my intention to Thee) and

leave behind (under Thy care) my family and property and that which Thou has bestowed on me.

I have full confidence in Thee. So do not disappoint me,

O He who does not let any one suffer a loss when one turns to Him,

nor let anything go waste when it is given under His care.

O Allah send blessings on Muhammad and on his children, and

take care of me under the circumstances wherein I am away from that which is associated with me; and

do not leave me alone on my own,
O the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.

Lastly recite, Surah Ikhlas, Surah Qadr, Surah Falaq & Surah Nas & keep some khak-e-shifa with you.

It’s important that the person settle his loans, Khums & other dues before he leaves for his journey.
Baghdad here I come
30th Jan
We left for Baghdad from Dubai by Iraqi Airways. I must say I was a little apprehensive about the carrier as I am a poor air traveller but it was Mashallah one of the smoothest flights I have ever taken! It seemed we were really on wings!
We landed at Baghdad airport around 10am and then began the long wait for the visas to be stamped for our group.
Tip: There is no availability of food or water in the airport so carry some snacks with. In fact you should carry snacks with you at all times since you can’t stop on the way and there are long bus journeys with any tour group.
All ziareens going in the near future should remember that Iraq has very poor infrastructure so simple things can take hours. Finally we were all boarded on a bus. This took us out of the airport to a parking lot some way off from where we got into our own bus. This meant a lot of lifting and shifting of luggage.
Tip: Travel light to Iraq!!
The first thing I noticed when I came out of the airport was the expected security. There were Tanks and police cars and lookout posts all over: And a sign which said "Use of deadly force authorized in this area”.
Since our bus went past it quite fast I couldn't see which area it was referring to.
We reached Najaf by late evening. The whole way we could see ziareens walking with Alams and flags to Karbala.
All along food and drink sabeels had been put up for them, as well as tents and shelters for them to sleep at night. The locals who were deprived of expressing their feelings for Imam Hussain AS for years under Saddam Hussain are now giving it their all. They take immense pleasure and pride in doing service for the ziareens... putting up food/water/ drink sabeels and shelters for them. At night they massage and press the feet of the ziareens some of whom have walked for 9-10 days to get there.
Since our hotel was located next to the Haram and buses and cars are not allowed there we were put down quite some way off.
We trudged thru heavy crowds into what seemed one check post after another. In every check post we were frisked by women guards and our bags thoroughly examined. This is another thing visitors must be prepared for. The constant tafteesh…
My first look at the Roza from one of the check posts was an amazing experience. At that moment I prayed for my father in law a very devout follower and Ashiqe Ali to come for Ziarat as well as other Ashiqe Maula Ali to receive this blessing of Ziarat.
d. When you reach the gate of the courtyard
e. When you reach the courtyard
f. When you reach the entrance of the canopy
g. When you enter the canopy, enter with the right foot forward and standing
at the door of the shrine, then recite a dua.
h. kiss the threshold and enter with right foot forward and recite a dua
(ii)Then go near t he grave and s tand there. Face the grave and keep your
KAREEMO YAA KAREEMO.

Then go into sajdah and say "SHUKRAN" a hundred times and supplicate as much as possible because this is the place for hajats.

Since it was a task reaching the Zarih e Mubarak I recited the Ziarats from afar then decided to plunge into the swelling crowds. I adopt the theory of Bombay local trains--just fold your hands over your chest (cos some ziareens ... I won't name nationalities have a habit of elbowing you right where it hurts most) and then wait for the crowd to take you to the Zarih. Don't panic if once or twice you get pushed back because eventually the crowd will get you there in its hurry to reach. I managed to touch the Zarih and then somehow extract myself. Being a glutton for punishment I attempted it twice more cos the hajats I wanted to make were not over.
All three are buried in the same Zarih and you have to recite three Ziarats.
A day well spent.. Back to hotel and an exhausted sleep.
Wida (Farewell) of Ameerul Momeneen (a.s.)
This is the dua to be recited when you go for your farewell visit to the Zarih:
In the morning after breakfast we let for Wadi us Salam (Valley of Peace) is the largest Islamic cemetery, and one of the largest cemeteries in the world. Located close to Maula Ali's shrine, this cemetery holds many of Islam's Prophets, and covers 1485.5 acres (6 km²) and contains approximately 5 million bodies.

It also has the tombs of Prophet Saleh and Hud.
It is considered mustahab to write your name and that of your loved ones in the mud as your soul then comes to rest in this most holy place. So of course I immediately wrote my names and all the other names I could think of. We had a small majlis there with the Maulana in our group telling about the significance of the place and about Nabi Saleh and Hud.
We had walked here from our hotel and we returned the same way. it's quite close to the Shrine but the immense crowds made it difficult to walk that small distance and of course the ever present security checks!!

In the afternoon we left for our Ziarat of Masjid e Hannana, Roza of Hazrat Kumail and Masjide Sahla.
Masjid Hannana is between Kufa and Najaf. The significance of this mosque is that when Imam Hasan AS and Imam Husayn AS were carrying the janaza of Imam Ali [a] from Kufa to Najaf, they passed near this mosque, and as they were passing, the pillars of the mosque inclined towards Imam Ali AS, as if paying its last respects. It is also believed that some of the skin from Imam Husayn AS head (that came off when Khul Mal'un was disrespecting the head of Imam Husayn AS with a knife) is buried here. Though we did not get a chance to see it ourselves.
Since it is very blessed to pray Maghrib Isha namaz at Masjid e Sahla we had to rush through this and Roza of Hazrat Kumail. This last is a small but very pretty Roza. I felt a great sense of peace praying here. The rooms were made of green onyx and felt very cool to the touch. Actually most of the shrines in Iraq are made with green onyx.
Just in time for Maghrib namaz we reached Masjid Sahla. There is a very important and famous hajat namaz of 2 rakats prayed between Maghrib and Isha with a dua to follow. All this is in jamaat and ziareens get much sawaab for it.
After the Masjid of Kufa, this is the most significant and had been the residence of Janab-e- Idrees AS and Janab-e- Ibraahim AS. Janab-e-Khizr AS used to frequent this place and according to the tradition of Imam Jafar Sadiq AS after the reappearance, it would be the residence of Imame Zamana (a.t.f.s.). He would stay here with his family.
All the prophets are said to have recited namaz in this Masjid.
There are many amaals in this mosque and our Maulana along with an Iraqi Moallim from the Masjid helped us through it all. I would advise you to download/ or carry copies of it with you as it’s difficult to follow it otherwise. Basically it entails namaz and Ziarat at the
* Mosalla of 6th Imam Jafar al-Sadiq AS
* Mosalla of Prophet Ibrahim AS
* Mosalla of Prophet Idrees AS
* Mosalla of Prophet Khizr AS. Also called Maqam al-Saleheen
* Maqam of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq AS
Lastly we prayed at the Maqam of Imame Zaman AS and also had a short majlis here.
I put in arizas in the Maqam e Imame Zamana. I had already brought them with me. It is advisable to write and bring many arizas as it can be put inside the Zarih of all the shrines.
We visited Masjid of Zaid bin Sawhaan RA which is near Sahla Masjid. He was a very loyal companion of Hazrat Ali AS. He was martyred in the Battle of Jamal.
Prayed 2 rakats namaz here and recited Ziarat.
Because of security reasons no cameras and mobiles are allowed inside the Harams and we are not allowed to carry it with us, since it is very time consuming to deposit them in the amanat counters and then get them out due to the heavy crowds. So no pictures!
Finally we left late at night for our hotel, totally exhausted by the day's Ziarat and namaz.

Masjid e Kufa
1st Feb:
Before going into Masjid e Kufa we went to the Roza of janab Mesum Tammar, a sahabi of Hazrat Ali and ate dates there .It is around 400 m from house of Imam Ali.
Masjid e Kufa is one of the four important mosques for Muslims and also one of those places where the traveller has the option to either pray full or shortened (qasr) namaz. It is - around 20 km from Rauza of Imam Ali.
There are many amaals here. It took us almost 3-4 hours to finish them all.
It is also very mustahab to pray the Zohar Asr namaz in jamaat over here.
There are prayers for entering the Masjid and then after entering it.
12. Namaz-e-Hajat in Masjid-e-Kufa
It is narrated from Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s. ) that whoever recites this Namaz-e-Hajat in Mas jid-e-Kufa would have his wishes fulfilled and his dua accepted.
It is a 2 rakat prayer. In every rakat after surah Hamd recite s urah Ahad, surah Kaaferoon, surah Nasr , surah Qadr, surah A-a'laa. After the Namaz recite the Tasbeeh of Janab-e- Fatemah Zahra (a.s.) and supplicate.

13. After this there is the Ziarat of Janab Muslim Ibne Aqeel (a.s.) and Ziarat of Janaab Haani Ibne Urwah (r.a.) ( He offered support to Hazrat Muslim in Kufa)
The entrances to these rozas are now from the side. Next to the roza of Janab Muslim is the Roza of Janab Mukhtar. It’s tucked away so don’t miss it. It’s in the same room.
It is quite tiring as I said. I am writing the duas which you may not get easily in English transliteration. The rest of the Ziarats are freely available and I have only given references.

Bait e Ali
We also went into the house of Maula Ali which is located just next to the Masjid e Kufa. Hazrat Ali used to have his own private entrance into the Masjid but that is closed now.
We didn’t have much time (a familiar story for anyone who goes with groups, because there are always different priorities and someone or other will delay you at some point. Most delays are at starting point itself.)
There are many khadims inside asking for money or offerings as they call it and after a while it distracts you from your contemplation of what a simple life Maula led.
I went into the room where according to the khadims Imam Hasan and Husain lived, the room of Janab Fatima Binte Assad and Janab Zainab , Hazrat Abbas AS and the room where Maula Ali was given his ghusl etc.
All these are very minimalistic rooms and bear testimony to the simplicity with which Ameerul Momineen lived his life.
At the side is a small well from which tapped water is running and vendors sell you cans to collect water in. I also collected it. Our group leaders discouraged us saying it was unsafe for drinking but my friend advised me to collect and give it for adding to the final ghusl of momineens. I intend giving it to my Mother in law as she will make the best use of it.Rana Safvihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12404171162962290391noreply@blogger.com7
